The African National Congress (ANC), after three decades of dominance, secured only 40% of the national vote, leading to the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) in June 2024. This coalition brought together ten political parties, aiming to navigate the nation through its multifaceted challenges.
The GNU was established as a response to the electorate’s call for collaborative governance. The primary objectives outlined were:
- Ensuring Stability and Peace: Addressing the nation’s socio-political tensions.
- Tackling Poverty, Unemployment, and Inequality: Confronting the triple challenges that have long plagued the nation.
- Upholding Constitutional Democracy: Reinforcing the principles enshrined in the nation’s constitution.
- Promoting Economic Growth: Creating an environment conducive to investment and development.
The collective vision was to usher in an era of peace, justice, and prosperity for all South Africans.
Since its inception, the GNU has made strides in various sectors:
